Andy Reid says Chiefs will 'progress as normal' with Rashee Rice during training camp

The Kansas City Chiefs missed WR Rashee Rice for most of last season due to injury. Now, he could be looking at more time on the shelf, this time because of an expected suspension stemming from his involvement in a multi-car crash in 2024.

The third-year pro was sentenced to five years of probation and 30 days of jail time. Per the Associated Press, Rice will have "some flexibility" for when he must serve the time.

Coach Andy Reid said it will be business as usual for the Chiefs, with Rice getting his usual reps and the team using a next-man-up approach.

"As far as Rashee (Rice) goes, I mean, that's obvious news out there now," Reid said, per A to Z Sports.  "We're going to progress as normal with him. He'll go in and take all the reps that he'd normally take, and we always rotate that position. So, depending on what happens here in the future, whoever needs to play will be able to step in. They'll know what they're doing and be in good shape to do it. But we're just going to, like I said, just progress as normal."

Reid also said that he didn't know when the NFL would issue his suspension or how many games he might miss.

Rice broke out as a rookie, starting eight of 16 games and hauling in 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven touchdowns. He was limited to just four games last season because of a knee injury.

Now, with a suspension most likely ahead of Rice, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes will need second-year pro Xavier Worthy and veteran Marquise "Hollywood" Brown to do some heavy lifting at the wide receiver position.
