After spending most of the 2025 season traveling between Triple-A and the majors, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Michael McGreevy made another great start when called upon Monday evening against the Colorado Rockies.
After giving up two runs in seven innings, Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras let it be known that McGreevy should have a permanent spot on the major league roster.
"I think he's ready to stay here. He doesn't need to go back to Triple-A," said the 10-year MLB veteran, via Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
McGreevy is a former first-round draft pick in the 2021 MLB Draft who dazzled during his MLB debut at the end of the 2024 season.
After a strong spring, he didn't make the Cardinals roster to open the season. He has made five appearances, including four starts, posting a 2-1 record with a 3.81 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 17 strikeouts over 28.1 innings pitched.
Three of his five appearances have been against some of the most intimidating offenses, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and New York Mets.
As pitchers Erick Fedde and Miles Mikolas continue to be among the worst starting pitchers in the majors this season, it seems that fans aren't the only ones willing to speak out about it.
With 51.1 major league innings under his belt with a 2.98 ERA, the 25-year-old has nothing left to prove in the minors.
After exceeding expectations to start the season and with the trade deadline approaching, the Cardinals need to focus on the future. McGreevy should be a big part of those plans moving forward.
