Commanders GM's comments highlight need for urgency in Terry McLaurin contract negotiations

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters broke his silence regarding disgruntled wide receiver Terry McLaurin on Tuesday, and his comments reveal why the organization needs urgency in coming to a contract resolution.

Commanders veterans arrived at training camp on Tuesday, and Peters shared that he expected everyone, including McLaurin, to report. McLaurin recently voiced frustration with the state of contract negotiations with the front office, whom he said hadn't discussed an extension in over a month.

McLaurin is entering the final year of a three-year, $68.4M extension he signed in June 2022. Last season, the two-time Pro Bowler had 82 receptions, 1,096 receiving yards and a career-high 13 receiving touchdowns.

He's one of four players to record five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons between 2020-24, joining Davante Adams, Mike Evans and Justin Jefferson. (h/t Stathead)

"Without a doubt everyone in this building values Terry very much," Peters told reporters ahead of the start of training camp, per ESPN Commanders reporter John Keim.

"We've had conversations recently and look to have more, and we'll do everything we can in order to get a deal done," Peters added.

The Commanders, coming off a 12-5 season and NFC championship game appearance, understand how valuable McLaurin is to them living up to increased expectations with rising second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels, the 2024 Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year.

While keeping McLaurin won't be cheap, Daniels' rookie contract gives Washington flexibility in contract talks.

Coming off season-ending injuries, wide receivers Stefon Diggs (torn ACL) and Chris Godwin (broken ankle) signed lucrative contracts this offseason, with the Patriots giving Diggs three-years, $63.5M and the Buccaneers extending Godwin on a three-year, $66M contract.

McLaurin, who is entering his age-30 season and likely also looking at a three-year extension, should certainly command more in average annual value, likely closer to $30M per year.

But if Washington has a player worth that kind of commitment, it's McLaurin.

"First of all, we're dealing with a really — in the case of Terry — a really good player and really good person," Peters said on Tuesday.

McLaurin is the type of player front offices crave. While Peters is saying all the right things, it's time for Washington's leadership to show it actually means it.
