Phillies pitcher's impressive season continues with complete game against struggling Red Sox

One night removed from a catcher's interference finish not seen since 1971 , the Philadelphia Phillies picked up where they left off on Tuesday night.

Philadelphia came away with a 4-1 win over the Boston Red Sox behind excellent pitching from starter Cristopher Sanchez, who tossed his third career complete game.

Sanchez was sensational, allowing only four hits, one earned run and zero walks on 106 pitches. He had 12 strikeouts and helped the Phillies improve to 8-1 when he starts at home this season.

He closed out the game by getting second baseman Romy Gonzalez to swing and miss on an 86-mph changeup. Sanchez recorded at least 10 strikeouts for the third time this season, hitting the mark when he struck out Red Sox outfielder Rob Refsnyder on an 84-mph changeup in the eighth.

It did not take long for Sanchez to take the mound with the lead, as Philadelphia took an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning. Much like the finish to Monday's game, a catcher's interference call was the story and drove in first baseman Bryce Harper.

That was all Sanchez needed to stay in command the rest of the game and continue a solid 2025 season. In his four July starts, Sanchez has gone at least seven innings, allowing only one earned run in each game and recording 31 strikeouts.

His ERA coming into Tuesday was a ninth-best 2.40 while his 134 strikeouts were tied for 18th. You have to go all the way back to a May 29 game against the Atlanta Braves to find the last time Sanchez did not pitch at least six innings in a game.

That kind of reliability has helped Philadelphia (58-43) stay afloat in the NL East, maintaining its lead over the New York Mets. On the flip side, the loss continued a miserable stretch of games after the All-Star break for the Red Sox, who have dropped four of their last five and scored one run or fewer in three of the four losses after winning 10 straight.

The Phillies continue to excel on their home field, improving to a fifth-best 33-18 in the league, per TeamRankings. If Sanchez keeps delivering and Philadelphia continues to find success at home, it could pose some challenges. With their inconsistency on the road, finishing strong and having that home-field advantage may be just what the Phillies need to make a run.
