This is a season to forget for the Baltimore Orioles, who entered 2025 with high expectations but have struggled mightily.
Injuries have ravaged the pitching staff and lineup for the last-place Orioles (44-56), and stars such as Adley Rutschman (.227 BA, eight HRs, 20 RBI) have underperformed. On June 21, the 27-year-old catcher landed on the injured list with an oblique strain and hasn't played since.
On Tuesday on the "Foul Territory" podcast, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic spitballed about the possibility the team could deal Rutschman.
"Under the current circumstances would the Orioles sign him to an extension? There's been a lot of talk about that over the years. Oh, gotta get Adley done; gotta get him signed. Well, if he's not going to be that much of a cornerstone player for you, maybe you look and say no. And maybe in the offseason you look to trade him then. I haven't heard that; I don't necessarily expect that, but they do have other options in their system. There's no question about it," Rosenthal said.

As Rosenthal mentioned, trading Rutschman still feels unlikely, but it's a possibility that shouldn't be dismissed.
The two-time All-Star burst onto the scene in his first two big-league seasons in 2022 and 2023 but hasn't played well since. After a strong start in 2024, Rutschman cooled off in the final three months of the season. He finished 2024 with a .250 batting average, 19 home runs and 79 RBI.
Given general manager Mike Elias' unwillingness to spend big money, it is fair to wonder whether the Orioles will be able to lock up all of their young talent. Shortstop Gunnar Henderson and infielder Jackson Holliday will be the priorities, so Rutschman's struggles, combined with the eventual arrival of first baseman/catcher Samuel Basallo, a top prospect, could make Elias' decision for him.
Rutschman is close to returning, perhaps as early as this weekend. He'll look to help the Orioles make a late-season push for the playoffs, though it won't be easy with the team 8.5 games back of a wild-card spot entering play Wednesday.
