With the MLB trade deadline less than a week away (July 31), the Yankees remain in desperate need of a steady, productive option at third base.
Eugenio Suarez is one of the hottest names on the rumor mill across the league, and the Yankees are definitely in the mix to acquire the NL RBI leader (86). The Yankees may have stiff competition for Suarez from other contenders looking to add pop at the hot corner. The Cubs could use a short-term solution at the position. In addition, two of Suarez's former teams, the Mariners and the Tigers, are likely to at least kick the tires on a reunion.
GM Brian Cashman and the front office in the Bronx know a "Plan B" may very well be necessary. Enter the perpetually rebuilding Colorado Rockies into the discussion.
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, Cashman and company are indeed interested in Ryan McMahon as a backup plan to Suarez.
The Yankees have interest in Ryan McMahon as a backup plan to Eugenio Suarez, sources said, as they try to upgrade at third base. McMahon is controlled through 2027, earning $16 million in each of the next two seasons.

McMahon may not be the most coveted solution for the Yankees, but he would undoubtedly be an upgrade to the cast the club has been cycling through lately.
On top of being a brilliant defender at third base, McMahon has belted 20-plus home runs every season since 2019, besides the shortened 2020 campaign. He is well on his way to that mark again, having hit 16 through 100 games.

McMahon is batting just .217 this season and is a .240 hitter for his career, all of which has been played in a Rockies uniform. As is usually the case with Colorado players, the 2024 All-Star has regularly turned in better numbers at hitter's haven Coors Field (.818 OPS) than on the road (.664 OPS) during his career.
Still, the Yankees, who currently carry MLB's highest team OPS (.787) and rank third in runs per game (5.20), do not necessarily need McMahon to be a middle-of-the-order producer. They could simply use a steady hand who is a potential threat with the bat.
