Capitals players hoping that 2025-26 season isn't Alex Ovechkin's last

Last season was nothing short of magical for Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.

Washington was the pace car in the Eastern Conference from start to finish, and a huge reason why was the play of their legendary captain, Alex Ovechkin. The pursuit of Wayne Gretzky to become the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer fueled the Caps all year long. It was a special scene when the Great 8 broke the record in front of the Great One at UBS Arena in early April.

Now that Ovi is the greatest goal scorer of all time, many are wondering if the 2025-26 season will be the last hurrah in his remarkable career.

To no surprise, when asked about their captain at a celebrity golf tournament on Wednesday, Capitals stars Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson emphasized their hope that Ovechkin has more years left in him. RMNB shared an article with their comments on X (formerly Twitter).

"Look, we don't know if it's going to be his final year," Strome said. "You kind of see what he said a couple of days ago, that it's preposterous that people would talk about that this will be his last year. I mean, obviously, it's the final year of his contract, so anything can happen. It's his decision, but I wouldn't rule anything out. I certainly hope so," Strome added.

"You can never doubt the guy. He could play two, three more years. He's a guy who loves to score. He loves the game of hockey. We'll see what happens. He's going to knock down 900 goals and then start chipping away at the next milestone," Wilson said.

Alex Ovechkin will be entering the final season of the five-year, $47,500,000 contract extension he signed with the Capitals in 2021.

There have been plenty of conflicting reports about whether or not this will, in fact, be his final NHL season, though it's fair to say anything could happen at this point.

The 39-year-old defied age this year, racking up 44 goals and 29 assists, good for 73 points in just 65 games, while also dealing with a mid-season broken fibula that sidelined him for just over a month.

With a Stanley Cup, the most goals in NHL history and all of the individual accolades you could imagine already achieved, some may wonder what's left for the Great 8 to do. Perhaps becoming the first player to ever reach 1,000 career goals? He needs 103 more to do so, which would certainly require another multi-year contract to extend him beyond 2025-26.

Ovechkin's teammates and the hockey world would love to see him start a new chase. Fans should cherish every time Ovi hits the ice moving forward, as the end of an era is nearing sooner rather than later.
