Athletics All-Star shuts down trade speculation ahead of deadline

With one week left until the July 31st MLB trade deadline, the hot stove has been cold since the blockbuster deal that sent Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox to the San Francisco Giants on June 15, though rumors are starting to pick up.

In recent days, Athletics All-Star Brent Rooker has been named a possible trade target for several contending teams, such as the Giants and New York Mets. However, it didn’t take long for Rooker himself to make it known he’s staying put.

Here is what the 30-year-old had to say when asked about his future with the organization on “Foul Territory” on Thursday afternoon:

“Yeah, I’m not going anywhere; we’re good; I’m staying. We’re good,” Rooker said. “Yeah, for sure, like I said, I signed the extension because I’m where I want to be. I believe in what we’re doing, I believe in the people that we have on our team, on our roster, on our coaching staff, in the building. I believe in everything we have going on, and I want to be a part of that. So, that’s one of the reasons why I decided to sign that extension and stay here. And, I will not be going anywhere this trade deadline."

Rooker is fresh off the second All-Star appearance of his career and would have drawn significant interest if available via trade.

The Athletics outfielder has been mashing once again in 2025, with 21 home runs, 56 RBI and a .275 average through 104 games thus far. He's on pace for a third consecutive 30-plus home run season, emerging as a late bloomer since getting a full-time opportunity with the A's in 2023.

Trade discussions understandably arose, given that the soon-to-be Las Vegas Athletics (42-62) currently sit with the worst record in the AL West and are 13 games out of a wild-card spot.

It's been rough for the Athletics, who haven't made the postseason since 2020, though Rooker is right to be excited for what they're building. Nick Kurtz, Jacob Wilson, Lawrence Butler and Tyler Soderstrom are just some of the young talents who have shown tremendous potential.

Their pitching needs help moving forward, but with all of these young bats and a veteran star like Rooker, you can understand the vision.
