The Chicago Sky turned in what was perhaps their worst performance of the season on Thursday as they suffered an embarrassing 95-57 blowout loss at the hands of the Seattle Storm. It was a home game at Wintrust Arena, which added further misery for this hapless Chicago side.
According to Sky beat reporter Karli Bell, this 38-point loss marks the most significant deficit for Chicago this season. The Sky also fell to 7-17 on the season after Thursday’s shellacking, which represents the team’s worst start through 24 games since the 2006 season when they got off to a 3-21 start.
In terms of big losses, this one on Thursday night is an undeniably massive defeat for the Sky.
It’s no coincidence that the Sky got utterly dominated on the same night that Angel Reese, arguably their best player on the court, was forced to sit out due to injury.
Reese looked fine in Chicago’s last game. She turned in an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double in Tuesday’s loss to the league-best Minnesota Lynx. The 23-year-old, however, suddenly popped up on the injury report heading into Thursday’s game due to a back injury.
The Sky ultimately decided to have Reese sit out the Storm matchup, which clearly put the team at a significant disadvantage.
Chicago will be back in action on Sunday in a highly anticipated rivalry clash against the Indiana Fever, and Reese’s status for that one remains up in the air. Caitlin Clark isn’t likely to suit up in that one as well after the Fever announced on Thursday that the reigning Rookie of the Year still has no timetable for her return from a lingering groin injury.
