Blue Jays stay atop the AL, take advantage of slumping Tigers

In a showdown between two of the best teams in baseball, the Toronto Blue Jays got the better of the slumping Detroit Tigers on Thursday night. Toronto took the opener of a four-game series in Detroit in convincing fashion 11-4.

Trailing 1-0 through five innings, the Blue Jays put five runs on the board in the sixth, four in the seventh and then two more in the eighth.

Ernie Clement, Joey Loperfido and Nathan Lukes went yard for Toronto.

Clement hit the first home run of the game, his fifth of the season, a three-run blast with two on and two outs in the sixth. He finished the game with four total RBI.

Loperfido made it back-to-back jacks, following with a solo shot.

Lukes' home run with one runner aboard came two innings later, pouring more salt in Detroit's wounds.

Although he didn't leave the park himself, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in a pair of runs on his own and had his 21st double.

Toronto's late-game offensive explosion happened in conjunction with enjoying a gem of an outing on the mound as well.

Eric Lauer gave up only one run off five hits through eight solid innings. He also posted six strikeouts, improving his record to 6-2 with a 2.61 ERA in 16 appearances and 10 starts on the year.

On the other side, Reese Olson suffered his third consecutive loss. Olson left after 5.2 innings after allowing five runs, six hits and two walks.

Despite similar records as the series could dictate who claims the current title of the top team in the American League, the Blue Jays managed to travel to Detroit at the perfect time. With the loss, the Tigers have now endured a 1-9 skid in their last 10 games.

Conversely, Toronto has been 7-3 over the same timeframe. At 61-42, the Blue Jays now hold the best record in the American League and are tied for the most wins across MLB.

But as is often the case in any series, especially during a long season, the tables could easily turn the next day.

Toronto will look to keep its foot on the gas, while the Tigers simply try to stop the bleeding of their recent struggles when game two gets underway on Friday night.

First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. ET from Comerica Park in Detroit.
