Jets HC shares when Justin Fields will practice after dislocating toe

The New York Jets survived an injury scare to quarterback Justin Fields, who suffered a dislocated toe on his right foot during Thursday's training camp practice.

Fields was back on the practice field on Friday but didn't participate in team drills. While speaking with reporters later in the day, first-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn addressed when the 26-year-old will resume practicing with his teammates.

"If Justin gets back to practice, that means he's ready to go," Glenn explained, SNY's John Flanigan shared. "He's going to be himself and I'm not going to hold him back from being himself — now the thing is we don't want anybody stepping on his toe, but he has to be himself when he's out there."

According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, Glenn stated that "the huge storm that was created really made no sense" regarding social media reactions to Fields being carted off the practice field on Thursday. While the Jets won't say which toe was stepped on by an offensive lineman, his big toe is reportedly fine.

"I'd rather have a guy that I have to hold back than have to tell him to giddyup," Glenn said about Fields wanting to practice on Friday. "He's built like that."

Fields was able to jog to autograph-seeking fans on Friday morning. Meanwhile, backup Tyrod Taylor is temporarily in the QB1 spot on the depth chart with Fields sidelined.

"Him being on the field brings good energy to the team," Taylor said about Fields hanging around the squad during Friday's practice. "He's one of our leaders. Obviously, him not being hurt for a long time is good news. Seeing him energized, back on the field, ready to compete ... yeah, it was good to have him out there."

The Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40M deal with $30M guaranteed in March to be their starter, and there's no indication he is in danger of losing the job to Taylor over the next couple of weeks. That said, it sounds like Fields could be a spectator when the Jets open the preseason with a matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 9.
