Are Rams putting too much trust in oft-injured QBs?

The Los Angeles Rams seem to feel comfortable about their quarterback situation, even if starter Matthew Stafford misses more time. But should they?

Stafford, 37, has been battling a back issue at training camp. L.A. head coach Sean McVay confirmed the QB will miss more time than initially anticipated during Saturday's practice. Before this update, the injury was expected to sideline him for five sessions.

In the meantime, Rams backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo will take reps with the first-team offense. McVay has plenty of confidence in the former San Francisco 49ers starter.

"I think Jimmy Garoppolo is a starting quarterback," the coach said at camp, via Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. "Obviously, we feel so fortunate to have somebody like Matthew leading the way, but Jimmy's done a great job. I think he's shown good command the first couple days. I've always thought he's a high-caliber player."

Garoppolo, 33, has proved he can win games. The 2014 second-round pick has a 43-21 starting record in the regular season. He helped the 49ers reach Super Bowl LIV during the 2019 season.

Garoppolo, however, struggles to stay healthy. In six seasons with the Niners, he missed 31 regular-season games because of ankle, knee and shoulder issues.

That amplifies concerns about Stafford's durability. Over the past three seasons, he has suffered spine, elbow and thumb injuries.

The Rams have one of the NFL's better offensive lines. L.A. allowed 31 sacks last season, the sixth fewest in the NFL. Still, if Stafford or Garoppolo went down this season, the Rams would likely turn to QB Stetson Bennett. That could be a disaster.

Bennett, a fourth-round pick in 2023, has yet to throw a pass during a regular-season game. Listed at 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, he's also undersized for an NFL QB.

With that in mind, the Rams should add another passer. QB Carson Wentz, a one-time Pro Bowler, remains unsigned. It's worth mentioning the veteran played for L.A. during the 2023 season.

Garoppolo and Stafford are proven starters. Preparing for the worst-case scenario, though, could be wise for the Rams.
