Shedeur Sanders has a plan to prove to the Cleveland Browns that he can be a starting quarterback in the NFL.
Sanders has received limited reps in training camp this summer as the No. 4 quarterback on the depth chart. Even with Kenny Pickett sidelined with a hamstring injury, Sanders remains the only quarterback on the roster not to work with the first team in practice.
Per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Sanders received reps with the second-team and third-team offense in practice on Monday.
During an interview with Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders claimed that Shedeur told him not to come to Cleveland's training-camp practice this summer because he's not receiving enough reps as the No. 4 QB to justify the publicity.
Shedeur knows there isn't much he can do at training camp, but he plans to force his way up the depth chart when the Browns play in the preseason.
"Shedeur told me not to come," Deion said. "He didn’t want me to come. He was like, 'Dad, I may get three, four reps at practice. I don’t want you seeing that. No, I’m not where I want to be. Let me get where I need to be.'
"And it’s so funny because this is his first time ever, and he’s dealing with it like a pro. Like he ain’t mad. He ain’t bitter. He’s like, 'I got work to do, but I’m going to put in this work. One thing, they’re going to have to let me play, preseason is going to come. When preseason comes, watch me work.'"
Shedeur entered the draft as a Day 1 or early Day 2 grade by most draft analysts and scouts. He has the talent to outplay third-round pick Dillon Gabriel in the preseason.
The Browns aren't setting up Sanders for success when they play their first preseason game on the road against the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 8 by not giving him more reps in practice, especially with Pickett sidelined.
The former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback doesn't have any room for error when he does get his reps in live action after receiving limited reps with receivers in training camp.
But it's a start for the rookie.
