Jaguars' Travis Hunter reveals mythical nickname ahead of rookie season

What would be a good nickname for Jacksonville Jaguars rookie cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter?

The second pick of the 2025 NFL Draft already has one in mind. He drew inspiration from a mythical creature.

"It's the unicorn," the former Colorado Buffaloes star told CBS Sports' Pete Prisco Tuesday.

That's not a bad choice. Hunter's ability to play both sides of the ball is rare. He won the 2024 Heisman Trophy after catching 15 touchdown passes and intercepting four in 13 games.

Hunter's continuing to play on both sides of the ball at training camp and excelling.

According to Garry Smits of The Florida Times-Union, Hunter caught his first touchdown pass of training camp Tuesday. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence rolled out to his left during a red-zone drill and connected with the 22-year-old near the back of the end zone.

During Sunday's practice, he broke up three passes in 21 snaps in 11-on-11, via ESPN's Michael DiRocco.

The Jaguars will let Hunter star at both positions during Friday's scrimmage at EverBank Stadium. Rookie head coach Liam Coen said this will help the team assess if it should change plans for Hunter. Per Smits, he has played 119 snaps (72 offensive, 47 defensive) through six practices.

"He'll go back to our defense before our mock game scrimmage and be able to kind of use that mock as an evaluation to see, alright, what do we need to do now," Coen told the media Monday. "That'll be kind of a, not a defining moment, but an evaluation time for us."

The Jaguars must be careful not to overexert Hunter before their first regular-season game against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 7. Thus far, it seems he can handle the intense workload. Remarkable stamina makes him deserving of the mythical moniker.
