Trey Lance's career has not developed as anybody hoped after he was taken with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Injuries, inconsistency and bouncing around the league has left him in a situation where he is trying to rebuild his career on a one-year, $2 million free-agency contract with the Los Angeles Chargers.
That personal rebuilding got off to a promising start during Thursday's NFL Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio, when he played the bulk of the Chargers' 34-7 win against the Detroit Lions.
Lance was arguably the best player on the field, completing 13 of 20 passes for 120 yards (six yards per pass attempt), two touchdowns and zero interceptions.
His touchdowns came on a five-yard pass to Will Dissly and a 15-yard pass to KeAndre Lambert-Smith.

The most important thing to keep in mind here is that any preseason results — especially early in the preseason — should be taken with caution. Starters are not playing, teams are not game-planning, play calls are as plain and vanilla as possible and final scores do not typically mean much. Individual stats may not always mean much. This certainly doesn't mean that Lance has figured things out and suddenly turned into a great quarterback.
It's still a nice start for him as he tries to carve out a role for himself in the league.
Lance hasn't really had many opportunities in his career and has only actually attempted 143 passes in his four seasons. He ultimately lost the quarterback job in San Francisco to Brock Purdy, spent some time as a backup in Dallas and is now competing for a backup spot behind Justin Herbert in Los Angeles.
If anything, preseason games are the perfect opportunity for players like Lance.
With Herbert as the main guy in Los Angeles, everybody knows Lance is not a potential option here outside of an injury. The Chargers would certainly like for him to become a solid backup, but if anything, this is an opportunity for Lance to audition for other teams around the league. If he puts strong play on tape, it might convince a quarterback-needy team to roll the dice and try to trade for him.
That would be a win for the Chargers to turn a bargain-basement free-agent signing into a future asset, it would be a win for Lance to potentially get a chance and another team might even find a quarterback option.
We are still a long way from all of that happening, but Thursday was certainly a strong start for it.
