The Indiana Fever have missed the services of Caitlin Clark of late. The team confirmed on Thursday that the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year will remain out for Friday’s matchup against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings, marking the sixth straight game a re-aggravated groin injury has sidelined Clark.
The Fever, however, have won three straight games amid Clark’s most recent injury spell, including Wednesday’s hard-fought victory against the Phoenix Mercury at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. It was Aari McDonald who stepped up for Indiana with a career-high 27 points to lead the Fever to a 107-101 win.
This has been the theme for the Fever of late as Clark continues to watch from the sidelines. Players have stepped up to the plate in her stead, with the likes of Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston, among others, carrying much of the offensive load.
Another player who has been on fire of late is Sophie Cunningham, who has started in all five games that Clark has been sidelined. Cunningham has scored in double figures in seven out of the last eight contests, making her one of the most dangerous offensive threats on the roster.
Off the court, Cunningham launched her very own podcast on Wednesday entitled “Show Me Something.” In her first episode, she talked about a lot of things pertaining to the Fever, including the best shooter on the squad not named Caitlin Clark.
When Cunningham was asked by her co-host, reality TV star West Wilson, if she feels she’s the second-best shooter on the squad behind Clark, the 6-foot-1 guard refused to answer the question directly.
"I think that's the cool thing about our team is we have a lot of great shooters," Cunningham said. "But I have been shooting the (expletive) out of the ball lately.
"But we all, you know, the highs and lows of season. Everyone goes through that."
Cunningham isn’t accepting the title wholeheartedly, but she’s confident that she’s up there with the best of them.
The fact of the matter is that Clark has been struggling with her shot for pretty much the entire season. She’s making just 27.9% from three-point territory on 8.0 attempts per game, which is a significant dip from her 34.4% clip from her rookie year.
The numbers actually tell a different story in terms of the shooting hierarchy in Indiana.
Clark is all the way at sixth in terms of efficiency from beyond the arc (at least 13 games played). Despite the numbers, however, it’s hard to deny that Clark is still the best shooter — and the best player — on the Fever roster.
This is when we put in the equation the fact that Clark is tightly guarded and the opponents' defenses are hard on her now. Also, during her rookie season, she led Indiana in three-points-made with 3.1 per game.
At the same time, Cunningham also isn’t wrong when she said that she’s been “shooting the (expletive) out of the ball lately.”
