Newcastle eye Alexander Isak replacement as Liverpool interest ramps up

Newcastle United have endured a frustrating summer in the transfer market, with reported pursuits of multiple targets, including goalkeeper James Trafford and forward Hugo Ekitike, ending in disappointment.

Trafford has joined Manchester City, while Ekitike opted for Liverpool, both in high-profile moves.

Despite the financial backing of their Saudi Arabian owners, questions are emerging over the club’s ability to secure top targets. That frustration has been compounded by the uncertain future of star striker Alexander Isak, who has reportedly expressed a firm desire to leave the club.

Isak is currently training alone at Real Sociedad’s facility in Spain, citing a thigh injury, and has not traveled with the squad on their preseason tour of Asia.

The 25-year-old is said to favor a move to Liverpool, who have already submitted an opening bid worth £110 million plus add-ons, equivalent to approximately $146 million. That offer is believed to have fallen short of Newcastle’s £150 million valuation ($200 million).

Head coach Eddie Howe confirmed that a bid had been received and rejected.

"I was made aware that there was a bid [on Friday] — that bid was turned down all before I even heard about it,” said Howe. “There's people back in England dealing with the situation.

"I really don't know what's going to happen next, but from our perspective we still support Alex in every way, and my wish is still that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again."

Preparing for a potential departure, Newcastle have made a formal bid for RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko, offering £65.5 million plus £5 million in add-ons. This package reportedly meets Leipzig’s valuation.

Manchester United are also interested in the Slovenian, while Leipzig are exploring a potential loan move for Rasmus Hojlund. Whether that leads to a player exchange remains to be seen, but Newcastle appears determined to land Sesko as a replacement for Isak.
