Jaguars HC believes Travis Hunter could do something historic in 2025

Wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter won the 2024 Heisman Trophy. Will the Jacksonville Jaguars rookie earn more hardware in 2025?

No player has won Offensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Rookie of the Year. New Jaguars head coach Liam Coen thinks Hunter could be the first.

"I do think it's possible," the coach told NFL Media's Rich Eisen Monday when asked if he could win both awards.

To accomplish this, Hunter would have to play both sides of the ball extensively, which he did with the Colorado Buffaloes. In 2024, the 22-year-old lined up on 1,552 snaps (753 offensive, 776 defensive and 23 special teams), via Pro Football Focus. He finished with 15 touchdown catches and four interceptions in 13 games.

In June, new Jaguars general manager James Gladstone hinted they would let Hunter continue to do this in the NFL. He has kept his word thus far. Through the first nine practices at training camp, the WR/CB has played 197 snaps (109 offensive, 88 defensive), via ESPN's Michael DiRocco.

Hunter winning both awards is still unlikely. As of Monday, FanDuel Sportsbook gives him +8000 odds to capture OROY and DROY, which are unfavorable.

Plus, the Jaguars may use him more on offense. The team listed him as a first-string WR and a second-string CB on its first unofficial depth chart.

Coen said he and his staff are still determining Hunter's workload for the upcoming season. The Jaguars host the Carolina Panthers in Week 1 on Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. ET on Fox.

"Every single day is completely packed," Coen said. "From the moment he arrives to the moment that he leaves, he makes sure that he is meeting with somebody at all times. And so I've been really pleased with our staff in general and his work ethic, and we want to play him as much as we can."

Hunter playing as much as possible would certainly benefit a Jaguars team that's aiming to rebound from a 4-13 season. It would also give him a chance to do something historic. However, that's a long shot.
