Luka Doncic could sign historic contract after Lakers extension

The Los Angeles Lakers locked in their star for years to come.

Luka Doncic on Saturday signed a three-year, $165M extension that will keep him tied to the organization through the 2027-28 season. He could've gotten more money and more years in his extension, but that wasn't in his best interests.

Per ESPN insider Dave McMenamin, the deal is structured in a way that could eventually lead to Doncic signing the largest contract in NBA history.

"...if Doncic plays the two guaranteed additional years on his deal and declines his player option for 2028-29, he could sign a five-year extension at that point worth around $418 million in his age-29 season," McMenamin wrote.

"That potential deal could make him the first player in league history to land an $80 million season salary, taking home nearly $1 million per game: A staggering figure. The last year of the deal would be approaching nine figures at $95 million—a premium price as the face of a $10 billion franchise."

Doncic could've gotten a five-year contract extension worth $345M, but he was no longer eligible for that deal after being traded.

He's one of the most electrifying players in the game, and if he stays in shape, he's going to keep the Lakers in championship contention for years to come.

Doncic is the latest addition to the long list of future Hall of Famers to wear the purple and gold, and as the face of the post-LeBron James era, it only made sense that his salary reflected his impact on and off the court for this organization.
