Indiana Fever suffer another injury blow with Caitlin Clark out

Already playing without injured star Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever got off to a rough start against the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday night.

Down 26-14 with 44.6 seconds left in the first quarter, veteran Fever guard Sydney Colson went down with a non-contact injury right in front of the Indiana bench. She has been ruled out for the rest of the game.

The entire Fever team and coaching staff huddled around Colson to give her privacy while she was looked at by the medical staff. She was then helped back to the locker room and did not return to the game in the first half.

The cameras caught a slow-motion replay of the incident, in which she appeared to injure her left leg.

Colson, who just celebrated her 36th birthday, is averaging 2.4 points, 0.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists this season.

The 11-year WNBA veteran won two championships with the Las Vegas Aces as a reserve. She signed a one-year, $90,000 deal with Indiana in the offseason to add experience and depth behind Clark.

However, as the backup point guard, her role has increased in Clark's absence. Despite Aari McDonald claiming the starting spot recently, Colson has already started six games this year — the most of any season in her WNBA career.

Clark has only played 13 regular-season games this WNBA season, and there is still no timetable available for her return from a right groin injury.

This article will be updated with further updates on Colson's injury status.
