On Friday, Deion Sanders told Colorado reporters that his son, Shedeur Sanders, would cause a "problem" during his first start for the Cleveland Browns.
A problem is headed Kevin Stefanski's way.
The head coach watched as Shedeur Sanders dissected the Carolina Panthers' hapless defense, going 14-of-23 passing for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the Browns' 30-10 win at Bank of America Stadium. The Buffaloes' product added 19 yards on the ground on four rushes.
Shedeur Sanders got the start because Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel were sidelined with hamstring injuries. The clear front-runner for the QB1 spot, Joe Flacco, was given rest for the first preseason game.
Shedeur Sanders spent some of training camp throwing to the equipment staff as the QB4 and hasn't received reps with the first team. He showed on Friday night that he deserves more opportunities for better reps in the preseason.
Following the game, Stefanski told reporters that he didn't want to divulge details of the quarterback competition but said Shedeur Sanders would get more reps in preparation for the Browns' preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 16.
Stefanski said he was pleased with the way Shedeur Sanders handled the moment against Carolina.
"Honestly, I'm pleased with the way Shedeur played," Stefanski said. "I'm pleased with the way the offense operated tonight. All things moving forward, as we continue to practice, will be focused on all of our guys' development."
Shedeur Sanders showed he's much better than a QB4, and not a player the Browns want to risk putting on the waiver wire before they can add him to the practice squad.
Shedeur Sanders has indeed created a problem for the Browns, who have six quarterbacks on the roster. Stefanski refused to tell the media how he plans to address it.
Given the way he ran his practices with Shedeur Sanders early in training camp, and even this week, by not letting him work with the first-team after naming him the starter against the Panthers, Stefanski doesn't appear to have the answer himself.
