Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently acknowledged that the club's 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX this past February has given him "more motivation to be even better" during the upcoming season.
For a piece published on Thursday night, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated sent somewhat of a warning to the rest of the NFL as he touched upon Mahomes' preparations for the 2025 campaign.
"The people here think Patrick Mahomes has had a look about him through the team’s three weeks at Missouri Western State University," Breer wrote about the Chiefs' training-camp experiences. "He’s being aggressive in pushing the ball downfield. He’s pushing his receivers. What that all translates to, we’ll see. But for now, it’s a way of bringing the team along with him, with a ratcheted-up intensity and focus from a team that didn’t really need anything extra to begin with."
Breer noted that things didn't go as the Chiefs planned regarding their offense last season after wide receivers Rashee Rice and Marquise "Hollywood" Brown missed time due to injuries. Rice appeared in four games before he needed surgery to repair a knee issue, while Brown suffered a sternoclavicular injury during the preseason that kept him out of action until Week 16.
Nevertheless, Mahomes won 15 of 16 starts to guide the Chiefs to the No. 1 seed for the AFC portion of the playoffs. However, he tossed two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, in the blowout Super Bowl loss to the Eagles.
Back in February, Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu warned that Mahomes would go "on a revenge tour" after Kansas City failed to become the first team in NFL history to three-peat as Super Bowl champions. Breer suggested Mahomes has the weapons to make such a tour a reality.
"Depth is better at the skill spots, which should help the team sidestep last year’s issues, when the losses of Rice and Brown blew up that initial vision," Breer added about Kansas City. "The Chiefs are expecting a suspension of Rice in the neighborhood of four to six games and are ready for it, with veteran JuJu Smith-Schuster and rookie Jalen Royals."
As of Friday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Chiefs third among the betting favorites at +425 odds to represent the AFC in Super Bowl LX this coming February. To compare, the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens were tied atop the list at +330 odds.
It sounds like Mahomes could use such projections as bulletin-board material as he prepares for the Chiefs' Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Chargers that will take place in Brazil on Sept. 5.
