PHOENIX — Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas continues to make history, securing her third consecutive triple-double during Thursday’s blowout 95-60 win against the Indiana Fever.

The Mercury dominated since the beginning of the game, keeping the Fever to less than 20 points in three quarters. The Mercury’s DeWanna Bonner had a better game against her former team, with 23 points and shooting 43.8% from the field. However, it was Thomas’ third straight triple-double that headlined the win.

During the fourth quarter, with less than four minutes to go, Thomas passed to Bonner for a three-point shot. The crowd erupted in MVP chants as the assist made her the first player in WNBA history to achieve three consecutive triple-doubles.

Thomas ended her night with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. She now leads the league with 219 assists, continuing to fuel MVP talks. The forward has made quite a campaign so far and Thursday’s game could be the game that leads her to the award.

“[Thomas] is an unbelievable player,” said Phoenix head coach Nate Tibbetts after the game, according to the team’s post-game notes. “She’d probably be the first to tell you or wouldn’t want to talk about it, one way or the other, but I think she’s probably been overlooked her whole career on how great she is… She just brings so much to our group each and every night, and I’m
just really happy for her with the performance that she had tonight.”

Bonner said that Thomas is a leader on the team and motivates her teammates to work as hard as she does.

“She sets the standard for our team, and we try to follow,” she said. “We are just grateful to have her on our side.”

When asked by the media about what it means to her to make history, Thomas said she’s “doing her” as she’s always done in her career.

“Super grateful for my teammates tonight and allowing me to go after that,” said Thomas. “But, yeah, I’m just super happy to be here. Super grateful for all the support, the fan base, and we’re just going to continue to do us.”

As Thomas continues to cement her legacy in the league, her MVP consideration won’t be ignored any longer.
