Is anybody winning Colts' Anthony Richardson Sr., Daniel Jones QB competition?

As of Thursday morning, it seemed that Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen was not all that close to naming either Anthony Richardson Sr. or Daniel Jones the team's starting quarterback.

According to Stephen Holder of ESPN, "there does not appear to be obvious separation between" Richardson and Jones regarding the competition that Steichen hopes will bring out "each player's best" ahead of Indianapolis' preseason matchup versus the Green Bay Packers this coming Saturday.

"Training camp still showed Richardson to be somewhat boom-or-bust," Holder wrote. "He routinely showed the big arm that allowed him to lead the NFL in air yards per attempt in 2024 (11.4). However, Richardson also had the occasional inexplicable miss on easy throws, leading to a handful of days in camp when he completed fewer than 50% of his attempts in 11-on-11 action."

That last part is concerning, as Richardson finished the 2024 season ranked last in the league among qualified players with a 47.7 percent completion percentage and a 61.6 passer rating.

It's also worrisome that Richardson suffered a dislocated right pinkie when he misread a blitz and took a whopping hit in Indianapolis' preseason opener at the Baltimore Ravens on Aug. 7. Injuries limited Richardson to just 15 starts of a possible 32 games over his first two pro seasons.

Steichen benched the 2023 first-round draft pick for two weeks last fall after Richardson took himself out of a game because he was "tired."

As for Jones, Holder said that results this summer "were usually sporadic" when the 28-year-old "pushed the ball downfield" during training-camp drills.

"This is perhaps not surprising for a player who has been mostly conservative as a passer during his career," Holder continued. "Jones was 35th among quarterbacks in yards per attempt (6.1) in the 10 games he started with the New York Giants last season. The league average last season was 7.3."

In short, it sounds like Jones has largely looked like the quarterback who went 3-13 over his final 16 starts with the Giants. After Richardson was knocked out of the Baltimore game, Jones completed 10-of-21 passes for 144 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions against the Ravens.

Jones is expected to start the Green Bay game "and play a couple of series" before Richardson takes over. As of Thursday morning, FanDuel Sportsbook continued to list Richardson as the betting favorite at -245 odds to start Indianapolis' Week 1 matchup versus the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 7.
