Kelsey Mitchell might have just saved the Indiana Fever's season.
After trailing by as many as 21 points against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday in what can be called a must-win game, Indiana pulled off a furious rally led by Mitchell, who scored 38 points to give the Fever a 99-93 overtime win.
After losing four of its last five games, Indiana's lead over ninth-place Los Angeles was down to 1.5 games as play started on Sunday. For much of the road game against the Sun, it looked like Indiana's playoff margin could get even smaller.
Mitchell, who leads the WNBA in total points scored this season, had just four in the first half. In the third quarter, though, the All-Star guard awoke from her slumber, scoring 13, although the Fever still trailed by double-digits.
Mitchell connected on two three-pointers to get the lead down to single digits in the fourth quarter, and, with just under a minute left, she tied the score with an old-fashioned three-point play.
Eventually, the game went into overtime. All Mitchell did in the extra time was hit three triples and connect on another field goal, pouring in 11 points in the five-minute stanza to lead the Fever to their 19th win of the season.

Mitchell's 38-point effort included making 11 of her 22 field goal attempts. She connected five times from beyond the arc in addition to dishing out six assists.
Indiana forward Aliyah Boston was clutch, too, with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while guard Odyssey Sims scored 19 and forward Natasha Howard tallied 18.
With the Minnesota Lynx, the WNBA's best team, the Fever's opponent for the next two games, a loss Sunday followed by a rough showing against Minnesota could have had Indiana potentially dropping to .500 or below or, worse, out of the top eight.
Now, the Fever have some cushion. They might be getting star guard Caitlin Clark back from injury, too. Head coach Stephanie White was asked Sunday if Clark will return this season.
"That's the hope. The hope is that she's back," White said, via ESPN.
If Clark returns shortly, a playoff run is still possible, thanks to Mitchell and her heroics against the Sun.
