Andre Onana could be on the move ahead of the summer transfer window. The Manchester United goalkeeper wasn't part of Ruben Amorim's squad that lost to Arsenal on Sunday, despite the manager confirming he'd recovered from an injury.
"We try to choose the best players for each game, so next week is a different life. This week, we chose these players," Amorim told the media before the match. "No (he is not injured), he's recovered but the other guys did so well during pre-season, so I need to balance that."
Unfortunately for United, Onana's replacement, Altay Bayindir, produced a calamitous mistake in the 13th minute to gift Mikel Arteta's side the only goal of the match. Now, questions have been raised regarding the overall strength of United's goalkeeping situation.
Furthermore, calls for United to dip into the transfer market for a new No. 1 have grown exponentially since the loss to Arsenal, thus leaving Onana's future in question. Fortunately for the Cameroonian international, The Sun has reported that Inter Milan is interested in bringing him back to the San Siro.
"SunSport can reveal his former club Inter are interested in re-signing a player who was a massive success in Italy," The Sun's Joshua Hall reported. "Onana, 29, also remains a cult-hero among Inter supporters after helping them reach the 2023 Champions League final, which they lost to Manchester City ... Christian Chivu is understood to be keen to bring in a new No. 1."
Onana spent one season with Milan, having joined from Ajax in 2022. During his tenure in the Eredivisie, where Onana played for former United manager Erik Ten Hag, Onana won three league titles in six years. He also helped Inter finish third in the Serie A during his maiden season with the club.
Now, with his future in Manchester in question, Onana could be tempted to return to the San Siro and fight for a starting place with his former team. The move would also work for United, as it would give it the necessary funds to chase a replacement, such as Gianluigi Donnarumma, who the team has been linked to in recent months.
Onana signed for United in 2023, costing $56M. It's unlikely he would cost anywhere near that this summer. Nevertheless, United would likely entertain realistic offers as it continues to rebuild the team in Amorim's image.
And unfortunately for Onana, that could mean he's the next piece of the Ten Hag era to be shown the door.
