Chiefs trade former second-round pick to desperate 49ers

The trade comes amid a rash of injuries for the 49ers, who are set to miss their No. 1 receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, for multiple weeks at the beginning of the season. On Wednesday, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that the league was suspending receiver Demarcus Robinson for the first three games of the season.

Rookie WR Jordan Watkins is expected to miss Week 1 with a high-ankle sprain. Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing have also all dealt with injuries this summer.

Moore will earn an opportunity to prove himself with a new team. The second-round pick in the 2022 draft had recorded just 43 receptions for 494 yards and one touchdown during his first three seasons in the league.

In 2024, he recorded no receptions in six appearances last season before the Chiefs placed him on injured reserve for a core muscle injury. 

Moore brings flexibility for the 49ers to begin the season, as he was used as a returner in Kansas City.

Moore appeared to be in a three-way race for a spot on the 53-man roster with Tyquan Thornton and Jason Brownlee during the preseason. The trade will allow the Chiefs to keep one of them. 

While Moore never lived up to the hype surrounding him as a second-round pick in Kansas City, he has a chance to redeem himself with another strong offensive coach in Kyle Shanahan and a quality quarterback in Brock Purdy.
