Storylines for the Tour Championship: Scottie Scheffler eyeing history

The 2025 PGA Tour season is coming to a close. This week, the top 30 players remaining in the FedEx Cup standings will head to East Lake Golf Club for the Tour Championship with a $10 million prize up for grabs. Here's what we'll be watching at the season finale.

Scottie Scheffler eyeing more history

Scheffler is already enjoying another historic season on the PGA Tour. The World No. 1 won his fifth tournament of 2025 at the BMW Championship, making him the first player since Tiger Woods to win at least five events in back-to-back years. With a win at the Tour Championship, he would become the first player ever to win the FedEx Cup two seasons in a row.

At this point, it's hard to envision anyone beating Scheffler at East Lake. The American is a heavy +150 favorite (FanDuel) to win the Tour Championship, which are his shortest odds of the season. It's nearly impossible to beat Scheffler in a 156-man field, let alone a field of only 30.

Final auditions for the Ryder Cup

Players won't just be fighting for the $10 million grand prize this week. Many of the American competitors in this week's field are also battling to grab one of the last six spots on the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup team. Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, J.J. Spaun, Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English and Russell Henley have already punched their tickets to Bethpage Black. Captain Keegan Bradley will make his six captain's picks following the Tour Championship.

That makes this a critical week for Ryder Cup contenders such as Patrick Cantlay, Chris Gotterup, Ben Griffin, Maverick McNealy and Cameron Young. Recent form is a strong indicator of success at the Ryder Cup, so any of these players winning the Tour Championship would send a strong, timely message to Bradley and his co-captains.

Is it finally Tommy Fleetwood's time?

Boy, it's been a rough few months for all the Fleetwood fans out there. The Englishman, who's long been searching for his first PGA Tour win, blew late leads at the Travelers Championship and the FedEx St. Jude Championship to add to his agonizing list of close calls. If it's ever going to happen for Fleetwood, this week is as good a time as any with only 29 other players in the field.

Fleetwood is coming off his best iron week of the season at the BMW Championship. Plus, he's been peppering fairways and pouring in putts through the first two playoff events. He might have the best chance of anyone to take down Scheffler—if he can conquer the Sunday scaries, that is.
