Tommy DeVito reflects on what could be final game with Giants

While rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart emerged  as the star of the New York Giants' preseason, backup Tommy DeVito impressed in the second half of Thursday's  42-10 blowout win over the New England Patriots.

Following the victory, DeVito was asked if he thought about the fact that it could be his last time representing the Giants at MetLife Stadium.

"I think about that in the sense of every time you go on the field, you never know what's going to be your last," DeVito responded, per Giants.com. "Having the roller coaster I've had in the past with injuries and playing performance, whatever it is, every time I go out, I try to put my all because, never know when it is going to be your last."

DeVito joined the Giants as an undrafted rookie in 2023, and the New Jersey native became a beloved figure among fans after he won three of his first four career starts. He then went 0-2 as a starter last season before the Giants acquired Dart,  Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston earlier this year.

Wilson will start the Giants' regular-season opener at the Washington Commanders on Sept. 7. Earlier this week, assistant general manager Brandon Brown said New York isn't looking to trade Winston. Dart obviously isn't going anywhere, either, which means the club will likely part ways with DeVito before the Aug. 26 deadline for teams to set their initial 53-man rosters.

That said, DeVito earned an ovation from fans as he completed 17-of-20 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns against New England.

"Means a lot," DeVito said about Giants fans' support on Thursday night. "...If I was in the stands, I would be cheering for anybody who was the hometown kid, too. It was appreciated. To go out and execute, still things to clean up, but felt good getting some time with two whole quarters to go out and play and feel the energy, excitement and love for the game again."

While DeVito could remain on the Giants' practice squad, he showcased enough against the Patriots to earn a backup gig elsewhere. Regardless, many fans will forever cherish the moments that DeVito (and his family) provided in the fall of 2023.
