Caitlin Clark is slowly nearing a return for the Indiana Fever, but in the meantime, their other key players have had to continue stepping up to keep the team in contention for a spot in the WNBA playoffs.
On Tuesday, the Fever took on the Seattle Storm, a team they trail in the standings by just half a game, and they took a 50-39 lead at halftime and continued to build their advantage in the third quarter.
In the process, one of their other All-Stars surpassed Clark to establish a new franchise record.
Mitchell, who earned her third straight All-Star nod this season, is one Fever player who has upped her production with Clark out. She came into Tuesday's game averaging a career-high 20.7 points a game and 23.3 points a game in the month of August.
She scored 16 points in the first half against Seattle, which pushed her past Clark for the most points in a single season in Fever history. Clark held the old record at 769 points, which she established last year as a rookie.

Mitchell, a 5-foot-8 guard, averaged 24.5 points per game in her four seasons at Ohio State, where she won two Big Ten women's Player of the Year awards and the Dawn Staley Award. She was also named the Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player in 2018.
Indiana took her with the No. 2 pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft, and she gradually emerged as a lethal scorer. She's currently third in the league in scoring average, as well as 14th in three-point accuracy at 39.9%.
When the team is healthy, Mitchell and Clark form one of the game's best and deadliest starting backcourts, with Lexie Hull and Sophie Cunningham providing outside shooting off the bench.
Overall, the Fever are ailing. Cunningham is out for the rest of the season due to a torn MCL, and guard Aari McDonald, who seemingly came out of nowhere to eat up minutes in Clark's absence, is also done for the year due to a foot injury.
Meanwhile, Clark is reportedly ramping things up as she looks to return from the strained groin that has sidelined her since mid-July. She took part in a walk-through on Monday, and Indiana coach Stephanie White talked about what it would take for her to return to game action.
"She went through it yesterday," White told reporters, per ESPN. "I want to see her in practice. Live in practice. I want to see her continue to work to not just build endurance, but to be able to handle contact [for] 94 feet as it's going to be in-game, and to be able to do that and sustain from an endurance standpoint."
The team currently has a 19-18 record, which is eighth in the WNBA. It has six games remaining in its regular-season schedule, and four of them will take place on the road.
