Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin insists his age is just a number.
On Monday, the Commanders signed McLaurin to a three-year, $97M extension. The move could be risky for Washington. The former Ohio State Buckeyes star turns 30 on Sept. 15, the point when WRs can drop off.
Former Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp (now with the Seattle Seahawks) hasn't looked the same since turning 30 on June 15, 2023. Over his past two seasons with the Rams, the Super LVI MVP failed to surpass 737 receiving yards.
McLaurin, though, believes he's an outlier.
"Fortunately for me, I'm only going into my seventh season. ... I've also been blessed to never have a surgery or major injury," the WR told the media Wednesday. "I take care of my body at an elite level. As much as I put on the field, I do as much off the field. ... Only time will tell, but just in January I ran a screen for like a 60-yard touchdown."
McLaurin was likely referring to a 58-yard touchdown in a 45-31 upset over the Detroit Lions in the 2024 NFC divisional round. Did he look like a player who's slowing on that play?

McLaurin's consistency also downplays concerns about his age. In his first six seasons with Washington, he eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards five times.
Pair that with his desire to prove himself this upcoming season, and the Commanders star could be in for another productive year.
"I do," McLaurin said when asked if he believes his extension puts him among the best WRs in the NFL. "It gives me the ability to stay somewhere I love but also continue to achieve things and play at a high level and prove that I'm worth what I signed for."
Stability at the most important position gives McLaurin a chance to do that. The WR is set to have the same Week 1 starting QB for the first time in his career. Commanders QB Jayden Daniels is returning after winning the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
The WR seems to be in an excellent situation heading into the 2025 season. Perhaps that will help McLaurin age gracefully.
