Yankees' Aaron Boone deserves a lot of criticism, but not for this

Sure, the sight of New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone at University of North Carolina season opener in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was a bit of a shocker on Monday night. It also unnecessarily turned into another chance for those upset with his job as the manager of the Yankees to skewer him.

With the Yankees having an off day on Monday, Boone being in North Carolina instead of Houston with the Yankees before they opened a critical three-game series against the Astros on Tuesday night seemed odd on the surface. However, Boone's son, Brandon attends UNC and is a student assistant on new head coach Bill Belichick's coaching staff.

Do those saying Boone shouldn't have been there really think that he could have been designing some new strategy for the Yankees had he traveled with the team to south Texas? Sitting in a hotel on an off day would do little good for a Yankees team that just went to the World Series last season and is well versed in what kind of pressure comes along with the last month of the regular season.

Boone spending an evening in Chapel Hill and leaving for Houston even as late as the next morning will do little to make a difference on whether the Yankees win or lose on Tuesday night ... or any other game this season.

Want to point fingers at Boone for an in-game pitching decision? Go for it.

Think it's right to chastise him for playing Giancarlo Stanton in the outfield instead of designated hitter? That's your choice.

Vent online about Boone being in North Carolina on an off day to see his son? Well, maybe take a step back on that one.

Yes, the Yankees are in the middle of a hunt for the postseason, entering Tuesday's series opener in Houston tied with the Boston Red Sox 2.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East. That number alone makes this weekend's series against the Blue Jays in the Bronx one to circle on the calendar.

Had Boone missed a game to go to the UNC opener, fans would have had every right to chastise him for the decision. However, with an off day, the anger on this one seems misdirected.

Save your anger for Boone's in-game decisions, Yankees fans. This boil-over simply isn't worth the energy or time.
