Ryan Day praises DC Matt Patricia, but Ohio State's defense still has work to do

It wasn't a perfect game from the Ohio State Buckeyes defense in Week 1, but holding Arch Manning, Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns to just seven points is a big deal.

That's why, presumably, head coach Ryan Day praised new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia when speaking with Colin Cowherd.

First and foremost, Patricia was able to build relationships.

"I've known Matt for a while. I know the type of person he is. He’s a great man. He’s a great husband, great father, and he really, early on, built relationships and trust within the building in a short period of time with the staff," Day said, according to On3.

The Buckeyes weren't perfect on defense, but nobody was expecting perfect. They just had to be better than Manning and the Longhorns, and to that point, the heralded Texas quarterback completed just 17 of 30 passes against the Buckeyes for 170 yards and a touchdown.

Sure, the Longhorns were able to put up 336 yards of total offense compared to just 203 total yards from the Buckeyes. OSU also gave up 166 yards on the ground at a clip of 4.5 yards per carry.

Those two numbers aren't great, but it was the first game of the season against the No. 1-ranked team in the country. It also gives Day and Patricia an idea of what the Buckeyes need to work on.

Still, only seven points allowed to a Sarkisian offense run by a Manning. The impressiveness of that can't be overstated. The Buckeyes were also able to pick Manning off late in the third quarter.

Day wants to see improvements, but he was happy overall with what he saw from Patricia's unit in Week 1.

"The players deserve a ton of the credit, but that being said, you know Matt put it all together," Day said. "And it’s only a start. We have a long way to go, but certainly, you know, for the first game of the year, with an inexperienced group going on the field, it was a good start.”
