Analyst says this SEC QB had 'flashes of Cam Newton' in Week 1 win

The No. 10 South Carolina Gamecocks kicked off the 2025 season with a 24-11 win over the Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday.

A lot of that had to do with quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who is back under center after a sensational 2024 season, his first as a full-time starter with the program.

He continued to show signs of his potential at the next level in that win, notably with a game-sealing 64-yard TD bomb to wide receiver Nyck Harbor in the fourth quarter.

Those types of plays led ESPN personality and former player Jordan Rodgers to make a strong comparison in his recent analysis of the dual-threat signal-caller.

Jordan Rodgers compares LaNorris Sellers to former Heisman Trophy winner

"Man I saw flashes of Cam Newton ... The big, physical, strong runner that can run through you and run by you," Rodgers said during a Wednesday appearance on ESPN's "Get Up." "He can change a game with his feet. Now, I'll say, he needs some help around him. Only six receptions by wide receivers in that game, only 12 completions.

"Nyck Harbor had a couple big drops, one early on a drive route that could've been a big catch-and-run and a touchdown where he's got two hands on it. You gotta bring that down. The one pass attempt that went further than 15 yards down field, that bomb to Nyck Harbor that changed the game, that's the flashes of brilliance we see from LaNorris Sellers and that's why I think he's put himself in the conversation of being a top-10 pick next year."

Following a highly successful 2024 season in which Sellers completed 65.6% of his passes for 2,534 yards, 18 TDs and added 674 yards and seven TDs on the ground, a lot was expected from Sellers and the Gamecocks offense this season.

While his numbers were modest in comparison in the Week 1 opener (12-of-19, 209 yards, one TD), Sellers still flashed his potential and led South Carolina to a wire-to-wire victory.

The latest Heisman Trophy odds from FanDuel have Sellers with the third-shortest odds (+1000) to win the coveted award, only behind LSU's Garrett Nussmeier (+800) and Miami's Carson Beck (+950).

South Carolina now finds itself No. 10 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll as it prepares for an in-state non-conference matchup against South Carolina State on Saturday night before hosting Vanderbilt on Sept. 13 for its SEC opener.

There is no doubt Sellers will need a more collective effort from his wideouts going forward, but the lockdown defense (two interceptions), special teams TD and explosive TD catch from Harbor showed this team can be effective in multiple areas.

With Sellers under center, their ceiling is extremely high, especially if he can get some more help around him on offense when the difficulty picks up throughout the season.
