The Dallas Cowboys' defense desperately needed some good news for Thursday night's season opener against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
The Cowboys traded away star pass-rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, and the status of their All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs has been up in the air during training camp as he recovers from a knee injury.
Per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Cowboys have "unbelievable" news on Diggs because he wasn't expected to return until later in the season. He's expected to play against the Eagles, though he could be on a "pitch count" for Week 1.
"My understanding is Diggs is expected to play in this game on Thursday night," Pelissero said. "That is unbelievable, because back in December, Diggs underwent knee surgery, was for articular cartilage. It's not just a straight-up ACL with a really predictable recovery.
"From what I was hearing back in the spring, they were thinking Trevon Diggs was going to be out maybe until around midseason. Now, all of a sudden, he may be on a pitch count."

Dallas plans to be cautious with the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback. It can't afford to lose the core defender for more of the season after losing Parsons last week.
Diggs' return is timely for Dallas. Philadelphia has a strong receiver corps led by A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Any good snaps Diggs can take are preferable to a backup secondary player stuck behind what should be a weak pass rush.
