A'ja Wilson continues to make history with recent award

In her quest to win an unprecedented fourth WNBA MVP award, Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson has once again taken the league by storm.

On Wednesday, the WNBA announced that Wilson has won the Western Conference Player of the Month award for the month of August.

Along with being the first time this season winning the award, Wilson now holds the league record for the most award wins all-time, passing Tina Charles’ 12 in the Eastern Conference.

It is unsurprising that Wilson took home the Player of the Month award, as she was dominant as the Aces have torn through the league with a franchise record-tying 12-game win streak. She has won three consecutive Player of the Week awards in August, pushing past Elena Delle Donne and tying former teammate Candace Parker for the second-most in league history with 27 awards (Charles is first with 33.) It is part of why Wilson is in the driver’s seat for Defensive Player of the Year, as well as making a late-season push for MVP.

Through Sept. 1, Wilson currently ranks first in blocks per game (2.2 bpg), as well as second in scoring (23.4 points per game) and rebounding (10.1 rpg).

Wilson and the Aces carry this momentum into their next game against the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday. Ironically, the Lynx have been the last team to beat the Aces, albeit in a dominant 111-58 blowout on Aug. 2. Should the Aces rebound and prove they can beat the locked-in top seed in the WNBA playoffs, the team can effectively cement themselves in the conversation of title contenders.

The Aces have kicked it up another gear to close out the season, and Wilson’s impressive play has been one of the driving forces behind the recent surge.
