Las Vegas Raiders WR Jakobi Meyers is still all-in on the team despite not getting a contract extension, even after he reportedly asked to be traded before he was denied by the team.
That still didn't dampen his mood about the team and is ready to help the offense in any way he can since joining the team in 2023.
In an interview with The Athletic's Tashan Reed, Meyers said he's "unsure about whether an extension will get done with the team." Reed shared "the primary reason he didn't go the holdout route is loyalty to his teammates."
Meyers went on to say he deserves an extension with the Raiders after he finished with 1,027 receiving yards and four touchdowns, Reed said. Meyers told him the Raiders disagreed and "I ain't trippin."
Are Meyers and the Raiders at a standoff?
It appears the Raiders are playing hardball with Meyers despite a career season. It is hard to argue what he has done for the Raiders since signing a three-year deal in 2023.
Jumping back to 2023, Meyers finished with 807 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Since joining the NFL with the New England Patriots in 2019 as an undrafted free agent, Meyers has been steadily improving and producing solid numbers that the Raiders have been looking for, especially after Davante Adams was traded to the New York Jets last season.
Meyers has always been a quiet player who would rather let his game do the talking, as evidenced by his time with Las Vegas.
Maybe general manager John Spytek is expecting more out of Meyers this season before bringing out the Brinks truck. The Raiders don't have a true No. 1 receiver, and maybe Spytek is banking on Meyers to prove to him that he can get it done.
What Meyers needs to do
Meyers is projected to finish with 989 receiving yards and five TDs, according to ESPN's Mike Clay. If those numbers come to fruition, then it is doubtful Meyers will get a huge payday from the Raiders.
It is possible that Meyers could have a bigger season with the addition of QB Geno Smith. For Las Vegas to consider the WR to have a successful season, Meyers needs to elevate his game to where his numbers are closer to around 1,150 yards and eight TDs.
If that happens, then Meyers could finally see the contract he is looking for with the Raiders.
