Bo Nix exceeded expectations during his rookie season in the NFL, but not everyone is impressed with the Denver Broncos' second-year quarterback.
Ahead of their Week 1 matchup in Denver on Sunday, Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons explained how Nix is easier to defend than people think.
"If his first read is not there, he's taking off running. So that's the reason why he don't take many sacks, because he's not just sitting in the pocket and trying to read coverage," Simmons said Monday, via DNVR Sports' Zac Stevens. "I would say we take that first read off, which I know our DBs [will], our linebackers are going to do a hell of a job on the back end..."
Broncos head coach Sean Payton took issue with Simmons' scouting report of the 25-year-old QB.
"I would disagree that he's just a first read. I know for a fact that's not the case," the coach said Wednesday, per Stevens. "Now, is he confident in his movement skills? Yes, and we'll get a chance to see them on Sunday."
Nix scrambled frequently during his rookie season. Per Pro Football Focus, he finished second in the NFL in scrambles (53) and seventh in scramble yards (402). (Scrambles are when a QB runs to extend a play and aren't a designed run.)
However, that doesn't mean the 12th pick of the 2024 NFL Draft doesn't know what the defense is doing. He wouldn't have finished third in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting or thrown the league's sixth-most TD passes (29) in the regular season if he didn't.
Simmons may be trying to psych Nix out before Sunday's matchup at 4:05 p.m. ET on Fox. The Titans need every advantage they can get. As of Thursday, ESPN Bet lists the Broncos as an 8.5-point favorite.
Still, that may not work. With Simmons giving him potential bulletin-board material, don't be surprised if Nix showcases his football IQ against the Titans.
