Daniil Medvedev's new coaches revealed for Asian tournament series after parting ways with Giles Cervara

After a barren run of results, Daniil Medvedev has turned his attention to his coaching staff, making the shock announcement earlier this week when confirming he would be parting ways with Giles Cervara. His replacements have now been announced, with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke in for a trial period.

Medvedev endured a positive stint with Cervara, lasting eight years. In this period, the Russian won the US Open in 2021 whilst making five other finals, three in Melbourne and two at Flushing Meadows. He ventured up as high as the world number one at the start of 2022, and won the ATP Finals back in 2020.

However, his form has turned on its head in recent times. Since the 2024 Australian Open final defeat to Jannik Sinner, he has only reached two finals: the first coming shortly after in Indian Wells, and the latest coming at Halle a few months ago. Both ended in defeats, meaning you have to traverse back to the Italian Open in 2023 for his last triumph.

The consolation Medvedev can take from this is that he was still making finals. Now, he is struggling to even make any headway in any tournaments. He has won just one major match all year, ending his US Open campaign in strange scenes after a cameraman walked onto the court when his opponent had a match point. The Russian lost his temper, lost the match, and received a $42,500 fine. The 29-year-old has dropped down the rankings to 13th in the world, and is threatened to drop even further with some of the tennis he has produced in recent times.

New beginnings for Medvedev

Despite a harmonious relationship between the pair, Medvedev has pulled the plug on their partnership in these last few days, dropping the Frenchman as he looks to stride back up the rankings. For this, he has called upon Johansson and Goetzke to aid him.

It was revealed from a post on Instagram from Bolshe Tennis, with a statement that said: "Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke are Daniil Medvedev’s new coaches! Our ambassador confirmed to us that he starts working with a team of two coaches. There is a trial period waiting for us. Daniil attracted specialists for the period during Asian tournament series. Thomas Johansson is the 2002 Australian Open champion, the former seventh racket of the world, he also worked with Caroline Wozniacki and David Goffin. Rohan Goetzke collaborated with Richard Krajicek and Mario Ancic; he is also the main coach of Court Sense Academy. Today, Danya is having his first training session with the new team. We wish them good luck."

Johansson was a professional Swedish tennis player who reached a career high of seventh in the world back in 2002. Earlier that year, he shocked the tennis world by claiming the Australian Open despite being the 16th seed heading into the tournament. Beforehand, he had only reached the quarter-finals stage twice in New York. He went on to reach a Wimbledon semi-final and an Olympic doubles final in his later years of playing, before hanging up his racket in 2009.

He went on to become a coach, supervising the likes of Caroline Wozniacki, Maria Sakkari, Sorana Cirstea, Borna Coric, David Goffin, and Kei Nishikori.

Australian Goetzke also played tennis, but never reached the heights of his compatriot. He went into coaching a lot earlier, helping Richard Krajicek and Mario Ancic fly up the rankings. He then took a job at the Dutch Tennis Federation as the head coach in 2005, before becoming the Director of Tennis at IMG Academy. In 2020, he moved to the States to join CourtSense. Now he has the chance to use his years of experience to mold Medvedev back into the player he once was.
