Justin Fields, former college teammate showcase renewed chemistry vs. Steelers

One big reason quarterback Justin Fields signed with the New York Jets this NFL offseason was to reunite with a college teammate.

The Jets feature star wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who played with Fields at Ohio State from 2019-20. The wideout explained how he was eager to play with the QB again ahead of Sunday's home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Garrett Wilson explained how Justin Fields could uplift the Jets

"It's awesome, man," Wilson said of playing with Fields again on Thursday, via Patrick McAvoy of New York Jets on SI. "Just to see that look on his face. One that I recognize, that I've been seeing (since college). Obviously, we had a little hiatus there since college, but knowing what that looks like, when he's locked in, man, and you can feel it. The way he addresses the team, all that. It's starting to come back to me, I remember that from (Ohio State)."

He probably also remembers most of the touchdown passes Fields threw to him. It appears they could connect for many more in New York.

Justin Fields' first TD pass to Garrett Wilson was a beauty

Late in the first quarter, with the Steelers leading 7-3, Fields fired a long pass to Wilson just outside the numbers on the right side of the field. The WR caught the long ball for a 33-yard TD. It was the Jets' first TD of the season.

If the duo connects on more passes similar to the TD, Wilson could be in for another big year. Per Stats Perform, he's the only player in franchise history to begin his career with three consecutive 1,000-receiving-yard seasons.

It could also help Fields — the 11th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft — salvage his career. The Jets are his third team. He previously played with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers.

If he doesn't latch on in New York, he may not get another chance as a starter. It's a good thing he has an old friend he can count on in New York.
