Daniel Jones' Colts debut says a lot about Giants' ability to build around QBs

Perhaps the problem was the New York Giants, not quarterback Daniel Jones.

This NFL offseason, the Indianapolis Colts signed the former Giants bust to a one-year deal and named him the starter after he beat out Anthony Richardson. Indianapolis fans were probably hoping he just looked competent in Sunday's home game against the Miami Dolphins. It's safe to say he exceeded their expectations.

Daniel Jones impressed in his Indianapolis Colts debut

Jones and company steamrolled Miami in a 33-8 victory. The sixth pick of the 2019 NFL Draft finished 22-of-29 passing for 272 yards and one touchdown. He also posted a stellar 115.9 passer rating.

His impressive performance snapped a 12-year Week 1 losing streak for the Colts, via CBS Sports.

Meanwhile, "Danny Dimes'" old team didn't look as good. The Giants lost to the Washington Commanders 21-6. New York starting QB Russell Wilson completed 17-of-37 passes for 168 yards and logged a subpar 59.3 passer rating.

The Giants, of course, were playing a much better team. The Commanders made the NFC Championship Game last season, while the Dolphins went 8-9 and missed the playoffs. Still, Jones' promising start raises doubts about the Giants' ability to build around a QB.

Per Stats Perform, of the 34 QBs who threw at least 250 passes last season, Jones had the second-lowest passer rating (79.4). Not all of the blame, though, should fall on him.

Last season, except for second-year wide receiver Malik Nabers — who had 1,204 receiving yards in 15 games — no Giant finished with more than 699 receiving yards.

Jones has much better pass-catchers in Indianapolis.

Its receiving corps features WR Michael Pittman Jr., who had 1,000 receiving yards or more twice in his first five seasons with the Colts. The team also added rookie tight end Tyler Warren (pick No. 14) in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Penn State product looks promising after recording seven receptions for 76 yards against the Dolphins.

Now, will Jones and the Colts go on an improbable Super Bowl run? Probably not. Still, the QB's career may have been more successful if the Giants had given him more help. New York better not repeat the same mistakes with rookie QB Jaxson Dart (pick No. 25).
