Giants HC Brian Daboll makes unsurprising comment on Russell Wilson's future

Like Brian Daboll was for much of last season with Daniel Jones, the New York Giants head coach was vague in his answers with the media on Sunday following a 21-6 loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson went 17-of-37 passing for 168 yards, leading the Giants to just two field goals in a lopsided loss to second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels in front of 64,544 fans at Northwest Stadium. It was the first game for Wilson with the Giants after he signed a one-year deal worth $10.5M in the offseason.

To add further insult to a coach quickly finding his seat hotter early this season, Jones finished 22-of-29 passing while scoring three total touchdowns (one passing, two rushing) in the Indianapolis Colts' 33-8 blowout of the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Per Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Daboll fielded multiple questions about whether New York would move on to starting first-round pick Jaxson Dart in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys.

The New York Giants won't commit to Russell Wilson

Unsurprisingly, Daboll wouldn't commit to keeping Wilson as the starting quarterback.

"We're going to get home and look at our game," Daboll said when asked if Wilson could be benched for the rookie. "Yeah, we're just right here after the game."

Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen entered 2025 on the hot seat. There has been rampant speculation from league insiders that the Giants will turn to Dart if Wilson struggles early in the season.

Daboll did say that he has confidence in Wilson to run the offense and stressed that the result of Sunday's defeat didn't rest just on his shoulders. Daboll was concerned about how New York was unable to convert touchdowns and had to settle for field goals.

Given how bad the offense looked against Washington, Daboll should give thought to starting Dart against the Cowboys on Sunday. That will give the rookie quarterback some experience before playing two tough playoff contenders in the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3 and the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4.
