NFL Week 1 panic meter: Lions stumble, Dolphins collapse and more early red flags

NFL fans tend to overreact to what they see in Week 1. Teams are typically never as good or as bad as they look in Week 1, but some issues may linger throughout the season. Here are disappointing teams and players from Week 1 with a rating on our panic meter. (A "10" is hair-on-fire level of panic.)

Kansas City Chiefs

Panic meter rating: 4/10

It's not time to worry about Kansas City's playoff hopes just yet, but this offense could be in trouble. After wide receiver Xavier Worthy went down with a dislocated shoulder in a Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, the Chiefs averaged just 6.1 yards per pass attempt. If Worthy misses extended time, this passing offense may not be efficient until WR Rashee Rice returns from his suspension in Week 7.

Can Kansas City tread water until then? We'll learn a lot about this team in the Super Bowl rematch in K.C. against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2.

Baltimore Ravens

Panic meter rating: 1.5/10

It took a rare Derrick Henry fumble and a herculean effort from Josh Allen in the fourth quarter for the Buffalo Bills to knock off the Ravens 41-40 in Week 1. Per Stats Perform, for his NFL career (including playoffs), Henry has 11 lost fumbles total on 2,759 touches (rushes + receptions). That’s .40% or one fumble lost for every 250.82 touches.

Luckily for Baltimore, it won't face Buffalo QB josh Allen (33-for46, 396 yards passing) again during the regular season. The Baltimore offense, which led the NFL in yards per play (8.6) and EPA per play (0.394) in Week 1, will continue to torch defenses.

Miami Dolphins

Panic meter rating: 8/10

Are there any positives to take from Miami's 33-8 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1? Tua Tagovailoa threw for just 114 yards and two terrible interceptions, giving the Dolphins the worst dropback EPA per play (-0.472) in the league this week. The defense let Daniel Jones go 22-for-29 for 298 total yards and three total touchdowns, as the Colts scored on all seven of their offensive possessions.

The Dolphins were woefully unprepared for the start of the season, and WR Tyreek Hill (four catches for 40 yards) could be close to an Antonio Brown-level blowup on the sidelines. Mike McDaniel must be the favorite to be the first head coach fired this season.

Broncos QB Bo Nix

Panic meter rating: 5.5/10

Could this be the start of a second-year slump for Nix? The Denver Broncos quarterback went 25-of-40 for only 176 yards, one touchdown pass and made three turnovers in a sloppy 20-12 win against the Tennessee Titans. Nix's -0.220 EPA per play ranked 28th of 30 quarterbacks in Week 1. He won't be able to get away with that level of play against any other team in the NFL.

Detroit Lions offense without Ben Johnson

Panic meter rating: 3/10

Yikes. That was not the high-powered offense Lions fans are used to watching. In the first game under new offensive coordinator John Morton, a 27-13 loss to Green Bay, Detroit managed just 46 rushing yards (2.1 yards per attempt). We'll give this unit some grace because of the wealth of talent around QB Jared Goff (31-for-39, 225 yards passing), but the Lions may not be the same offense without Ben Johnson, their former OC who's now Bears HC.
