Ben Simmons reportedly made shocking Knicks decision

Ben Simmons became an unrestricted free agent at the start of the summer after his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers expired. Since then, Simmons has been linked with numerous new teams, chief among them being the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks.

Yet, according to NBA insider Marc Stein, Simmons has rejected a one-year deal from New York.

"The Knicks, league sources said, indeed offered a one-year contract to Ben Simmons that the former All-Star passed on," Stein reported.

By rejecting an offer from New York, Simmons will likely head into the new season as a free agent. Therefore, he may need to wait for a new opportunity to arise once teams are in full swing and know where they need some additional help.

Ben Simmons could choose to retire

Simmons' decision to reject a contract offer from the Knicks could also be an indication that he's ready to step away from the NBA. According to a recent report from Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, the former Rookie of the Year is considering his future as a professional.

"Ben Simmons has generated interest from the Knicks and another team but is also questioning whether he even wants to continue playing in the NBA next season, The Post has learned," Bondy reported.

The former first overall draft pick has struggled in recent years, bouncing between the Brooklyn Nets and Clippers but failing to make a realistic impact. His lack of aggression when attacking the rim, coupled with his limited shot profile, has made him an easy player to guard out of games.

Ben Simmons' back injury changed his trajectory

Simmons sat out the 2021-22 NBA season. Part of the reason he chose to do that was due to mental health struggles. However, he was also dealing with a significant back issue.

It's that same back issue that appears to have derailed his career. He doesn't move the same, and looks labored on the court. Without his full range of motion, Simmons has been unable to shine on either side of the floor.

And now, with minimum contracts the only thing on offer, he may feel the time is right to pursue other ventures. It's a tough outcome for a player who once seemed destined for stardom, especially as he should be in the prime of his career.

However, if Simmons isn't happy with the production he's providing, perhaps making the tough choice is the right decision to make.
