Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber extended his National League home run lead on Tuesday night by clubbing his 50th home run of the season against the New York Mets. It not only gave him the first 50HR season of his career, it also put him in some pretty exclusive company both with the Phillies and all of Major League Baseball.
With his 50th home run, Schwarber became just the second player in the history of the Phillies franchise to reach that milestone in a single season.
He joins former first baseman Ryan Howard who is still the franchise's single-season record-holder with 58 home runs during the 2006 season. It would take quite a hot streak for Schwarber to catch Howard's record over the next few weeks, but he is perfectly capable of going on a run that could help him challenge it.
Here is a look at his 50th HR from Tuesday's game:

It's not just this season where Schwarber has been a dominant power source for the Phillies. Including his 50 home runs this season he has already hit 181 home runs in his first four seasons with the club. That is currently the third most home runs ever hit by a player in their first four seasons with a team, trailing only Babe Ruth's 189 with the New York Yankees and Mark McGwire's 191 with the St. Louis Cardinals.
If Schwarber can hit nine more home runs he would not only break the Phillies' single-season home run record, he would also pass Ruth for second place on that list.

Schwarber is in the final year of his contract with Philadelphia and is seeking a new long-term contract extension. Given his importance to the Phillies lineup, they would be wise to give him that new contract.
