Carmelo Anthony was inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday. But despite this honor, it's not likely his jersey goes to the rafters for any NBA team.
Anthony, who is No. 10 on the NBA's all-time scoring list, split the first 14 seasons of his NBA career with the Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks. He made four All-Star teams with the Nuggets, made the playoffs his first seven seasons and reached the Western Conference Finals in 2008-09.
But his relationship with Denver soured after that. In the summer of 2010, Anthony married actress and New York City native Lala Vasquez. At the wedding, Chris Paul gave a toast declaring he would form a "Big Three" in New York with Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire. Then Anthony declined to sign a maximum extension with Denver, making it clear he wanted to go to New York.
Eight months after signing Stoudemire, the Knicks made a blockbuster trade to bring Anthony to the Big Apple, sending Denver four players and two first-round picks in a four-team deal — one of which became guard Jamal Murray.
Anthony was an All-Star, but the Nuggets lost in the first round of the playoffs in six of his seven seasons. He may have been the best Nuggets player since Alex English, but he's since been eclipsed by three-time MVP Nikola Jokic — who happens to wear Anthony's No. 15. If there's ever a No. 15 jersey hung in the rafters in Denver, it will have Jokic's name on the back.
There's a better chance Anthony gets his jersey retired by the Knicks, but the Melo Era in NYC wasn't very successful. Anthony won the scoring title in 2012-13 and finished third in the MVP voting, but that was the last season he made the playoffs with the Knicks. Overall the Knicks were 7-14 in the playoffs and had a 221-282 record while Anthony was on the team.
The Knicks have fairly high standards for retired jerseys. They've honored six members of their championship teams of the 1970's, 11-time All-Star Patrick Ewing, who reached the NBA Finals twice and Dick McGuire, a five-time All-Star with the Knicks who also coached the team for 10 seasons. Anthony was a New York icon, but his teams simply weren't very good.
There's still a chance the jersey retirement will happen someday. The Nuggets could always retire No. 15 twice, as the Knicks did for McGuire and Earl Monroe, who both wore No. 15. The Knicks are making a concerted effort to honor past stars in recent years, devoting a section of seats to former Knicks during the playoffs.
But the problem with Anthony splitting his career between two franchises means that his career with each falls short of true excellence. Ultimately, the Knicks and Nuggets both enjoyed their most success in decades in the years after Anthony departed, not while he was there. He has a plaque at the Hall of Fame, but Anthony may not see his jersey hanging up in an NBA arena for a long time, if ever.
