Packers lose key WR to collarbone injury in win over Commanders

A key wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers is set to be placed on injured reserve after suffering an injury on Thursday night. Per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed Jayden Reed suffered a fractured collarbone and is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

"Packers WR Jayden Reed, ruled out tonight with a shoulder injury, has suffered a fractured collarbone, coach Matt LaFleur said," Rapoport posted on X. "He’s headed for Injured Reserve and out for the foreseeable future. They do expect him back this season. The hope is that it’s a 6-8 week injury for Jayden Reed, which would bring him back in November."

Reed suffered the injury on the opening drive of the game. He caught a 39-yard pass that would have been ruled a touchdown but was taken off the board via a holding penalty by second-round rookie offensive lineman Anthony Belton.

A key injury to the Green Bay Packers

Reed did not have any receiving stats in the Packers' 27-18 win over the Commanders in front of 77,289 fans at Lambeau Field. The 2023 second-round pick caught three passes for 45 yards and a touchdown in Week 1.

Reed's injury is a concern for Green Bay, which is already short at receiver. The Packers signed Christian Watson to a contract extension this week as an incentive for the pass-catcher not to rush his return to the field until he's fully healthy.

With Reed out, the Packers and Watson will be itching for his return to the field to come sooner rather than later. The Packers appear to be one of the best teams in the league in the early season, and they need their best players on the field to fight for playoff seeding.
