Despite big names and even bigger salaries, it's clear that, right now, the New York Mets aren't built for October.
After dropping their eighth consecutive game on Saturday with another home loss to the Texas Rangers, New York officially has its longest losing streak of the year. The Mets entered Saturday's game with their third seven-game losing streak of 2025, marking the first time since 1980 that the franchise had lost seven games in a row three straight times.
That Mets team, by the way, went 67-95 and finished in last place in the National League East. It also finished with zero postseason wins, something this year's Mets team may match them on as well.
The 1980 Mets also didn't have an active payroll of more than $265 million, the second-highest of any MLB team (only behind the Los Angeles Dodgers). That season, the Mets pocketed a lot of money on a roster that wasn't constructed to make the playoffs. Maybe Steve Cohen could learn a lesson from the record books and save some money next season if it is going to result in a deep October run.
In the middle of a stretch of 10 consecutive games and 16 games in 17 days, the Mets are now 1-8. It's been an implosion on all levels for the Mets, a team that posted a 6.95 ERA in a seven-game span prior to Saturday's loss while batting .196/.250/.326 during that stretch.
It also doesn't get any easier for the Mets after the Rangers leave town, as the San Diego Padres, chasing the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, come in to open a series after a welcome off day on Monday.
That Monday is going to be needed in Queens as the Mets need some kind of reset and some kind of soul-searching if they are going to save their season. Sure, FanGraphs still gives the Mets a 73.2 percent chance to make the postseason, but that's down from 96.6 percent on Sept. 5.
And even if the Mets make the postseason, is this a team that strikes fear into any other fan base? In its current state, the answer is no.
The Mets may have had their annual Alumni Classic Game on Saturday, but they need to separate the current squad from their rendition of the 1980 team as soon as possible if they're to be anything other than an end-of-the-season dud.
