Lions offense bounces back from Week 1 performance in major way

There was a lot of banter regarding the poor offensive showing from the Detroit Lions in a Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The Lions certainly took notice and responded emphatically on Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Detroit won 52-21 and completely dominated its division rival, resembling its league-best offense from last season that had its way with most opponents.

Quarterback Jared Goff was held in check to 225 yards last week, and the team only had an average of 3.8 yards per play, a far cry from the explosiveness the Lions showed last year. On Sunday, it was a totally different story.

Lions show they can still be effective without Ben Johnson

This was the second game under new offensive coordinator John Morton after Johnson departed to be the Bears head coach. It was certainly a much better outcome this time around.

Goff was sensational, going 23-of-28 for 334 yards and five TDs. This 44-yard bomb to wide receiver Jameson Williams extended Detroit's lead to 38-14 in the third quarter.

This strike to wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown made it a 52-21 game halfway through the fourth quarter. The TD was St. Brown's third of the day after a quiet opener with only 45 yards.

St. Brown had nine catches for 115 yards and three TDs in the game, more in line with what fans have come to expect out of the All-Pro receiver. Williams added two catches for 108 yards and that third-quarter TD to give Detroit two 100-yard receivers.

Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs (12 carries, 94 yards, one TD) and David Montgomery (11 carries, 57 yards, one TD) split the load in the backfield while Goff had as many TDs (five) as incompletions, speaking to his efficient outing on Sunday.

Detroit had 511 total yards of offense and averaged 8.8 yards per play. The defense forced two Bears turnovers and picked up four sacks on Bears QB Caleb Williams, including this one from star Aidan Hutchinson early in the fourth quarter.

After a blown second-half lead against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night, the Bears were clearly no match for the Lions, but Detroit still had to take care of business and prove that it can move on without Johnson calling the plays.

It was just one game, but it is hard to deny how impressive the Lions were following a disappointing opener. To make it even sweeter, Detroit defeated its former OC and proved that it can still be just as effective without him.
