Broncos HC Sean Payton doesn't hold back on 'bitter' loss to Colts

The Denver Broncos let a game slip away that could haunt them with an upcoming schedule that includes the Los Angeles Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles in the next three weeks.

The Broncos appeared to have Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts won before a leverage penalty on linebacker Dondrea Tillman allowed Colts kicker Spencer Shrader a successful second chance to kick a game-winning field goal with time expiring.

A frustrating loss for Denver Broncos

Following the game, Broncos head coach Sean Payton told the media that it would be painful to watch film on the 29-28 loss to the Colts.

“It’ll be painful to watch that film, and yet we’ll get the corrections made," Payton said via Will Petersen of denversports.com. "So, it starts with me, our staff, but we had a number of opportunities to not be in that position late. Unfortunately, we shot ourselves in the foot too many times."

The Broncos had opportunities to extend their lead in the fourth quarter, but an interception of quarterback Bo Nix and a 42-yard missed field goal (that hit the right upright) by Wil Lutz wound up contributing to a brutal loss in Week 2.

Payton and Nix showed frustration during the game, with the two sharing a heated moment in the second half.

Payton thought Denver should have controlled the second half.

"There will be a bitter taste in our mouth for a little bit," Payton said. "And it’s because we put ourselves in a position to control that game late and then it slipped out of our hands."

The Broncos can't linger on the hurt for too long, as they travel to play the Chargers in an important AFC West contest in Week 3.
